True to form it is time to look back on another year that has passed way too quickly. Most of all it has been a year of change, where we uprooted and moved across the country to Høje Taastrup, my girlfriend became my wife to be, we both started new jobs, and we began building our new house. Last months at Vertica
The year started out with Vertica being named the happy workplace of the month for January. Also in January we did a Vertica Innovation Camp where I was part of a project where we looked at a different approach to building a light weight CMS that we called Corina on top of RavenDB. We finished runners up in the competition and received the judges special award, so I think we had some interesting ideas.
With regards to sharpening my coding skills, I completed the 10gen M101P course where I got deeper into MongoDB and got to play around with Python again. I highly recommend the course, as it was a lot of fun and very hands on. Having worked quite a bit with AngularJS I also started looking into what google call web components, which combine shadow DOM, templates and custom elements to build isolated reusable components.
Getting involved
I also started the year out wanting to do more community stuff, so I got accepted as a founding member in the F# Software Foundation and also became part of the ANUG core group. Unfortunately the latter was rather short lived, since we later made the decision to move which made it hard to keep being involved. So for now I hope that I will get the chance to participate around CNUG in the near future – as well as doing more for Copenhagen JS, where I already hosted my meeting as a way of putting d60 on the map in Copenhagen.

When I started at d60 in the summer I quickly got to do a brownbag, which is where developers have lunch together and someone presents a topic and shows off some code. I did an overview of HTML5 and showed some AngularJS, which later turned into some internal training sessions on HTML5 and javascript basics. All this talk sparked some ideas along the way so I was asked to do some demoes for potential clients, especially focusing on displaying graphs realtime on the web. In turn this let me look at AngularFire, which I will be speaking about at The Warm Crocodile Developers Conference next year.
In the last couple of months I have been helping rewrite and extend a JavaScript API for tracking user behaviour for Raptor – which is a child company of d60 . This has also become the first project where I have been working with TypeScript – which made sense in order to make it more maintainable in the long run. With the TypeScript support baked into Visual Studio 2013 this has been pretty smooth.
Technology focus
All in all the major themes for the year at work has been NoSQL with RavenDB and MongoDB, Single Page Applications with AngularJS and of course Cloud with Azure. In my spare time where I always try to look outside the box I have been coding a bit of NodeJS and Clojure, which has been my language to learn for the year. So in the summer vacation I scratched the surface of building a web application using compojure, monger, hiccup and cheshire – hopefully there will be more time for this in the coming year. Lately ElasticSearch is looking interesting, so they are the latest contender for my attention in 2014.
